Intel researchers hope the Cloud will provide a new model todeliver accurate information about the quality of air and weatherwithin meters of where a user is standing, which could ultimatelyhelp improve the quality of life. Intel has a project under way to populate neighborhoods withsensors that give a more accurate picture of elements likepollution and weather, said Terrance O'Shea,Nike Lunarglide Sort Hvid Sko, a senior principalengineer at Intel Research. The plan entails gathering weather andair quality information from the sensors, triangulating a user'sexact position,Nike Air Max 24-7 hvid orange Sko, and then delivering accurate information for thatlocation using a personalized cloud service. The weather information provided today is pretty generic, based onsensors in specific locations such as an airport. The point of these sensors is to provide a better quality of life,O'Shea said. For example, the pollution mobile toolkit includescarbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and ozone sensors that measure airquality to see if an area is safe. Such information is typicallyhelpful for people like asthma patients. While it may seem tedious to put sensors across stores, bars andpizza parlors in neighborhoods, it's practical and could happensoon, O'Shea said. d.

For example, a user requesting weatherinformation may get an advertisement of the closest store. Such services won't cost users extra on existing data plans, as thecloud providers will get revenue through advertising. But therewill need to be consistency across data collection from sensors foraccurate analysis of weather and pollution patterns, O'Shea said. Intel has tried to use sensor chips to deliver accurate informationon pollution and weather in the past.

Smartphones in pockets don't measuretemperatures accurately, and laptops for now are good at onlymeasuring internal PC temperature. A smartphone design also mayneed to be changed so sensors can gather information accurately.
But when practical, Intel's goal is to ultimately include sensorsinside devices, O'Shea said. Intel is already planning a radicalredesign for future chips through a technology callednear-threshold voltage (NTV), in which CPUs can operate atextremely low voltage levels. Intel's goal is also to make cities smarter, and the company has anumber of research projects under way that use sensor kits forenergy, traffic light and gas station management. The chips includecomponents that process data at the hardware level, but theresearchers are complementing the sensors with algorithms that mineand analyze the data.
Intel hopes to ultimately make more money off these projects.O'Shea said. The data generated by sensors requires more servers toprocess, which could help Intel sell more chips, O'Shea said.
